vHost - Make Your Own Virtual Hosting Easily

vHost is a one-step solution for all virtual hosting needs. It's easy to install for anyone.

Currently vHost has been tested on several major Linux distributions and FreeBSD/NetBSD. Minimum system requirements are perl and gcc in order to get vHost installed.

It enables a Linux/BSD server with single or multiple IP addresses to function as unlimited virtual hosts with HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and other virtual services extentable via modules.

It comes with both a command-line interface and a web-based GUI (control panel), which give maximum control to a domain's owner, while relieving the system administrator of most routine administration tasks.

Other major features include four levels of login, comprehensive quota control, and built-in clustering capability. Check more.

Difference between Windows and Unix Hosting

Microsoft Windows and NT Web Hosting provides you such applications as MS Access, Active Server Pages, ODBC database connectivity. Unix Hosting gives you powerful features such as FTP, MySQL, Perl, ColdFusion, SSH and the like.

If you need to support Microsoft products such as ASP, VBScript or MS Access, or if you already understand IIS and don't have time to learn UNIX, Windows hosting would be a well-suited choice. Keep in mind that Windows is a Microsoft proprietary so users are dependent on Microsoft to release updates and individuals cannot modify the code.

Unix is known to be more common with web hosts due to its stability. Linux, a flavour of Unix, is cheaper than Windows and usually free. Linux and the other UNIX varieties are open-source software, which means anyone can alter the source code and make improvements, updates, and additions.

Unix Hosting is more safer?

Attackers are no longer bothering to attack average Unix systems, because there's so much more money to be made from invading Windows, according to security researchers. Windows systems is so widespread that it presents an irresistible target. Most of viruses in the world is targeting to Windows system. And Unix have more powerful safety tools, such as SSH. SSH protects a network from attacks such as IP spoofing, IP source routing, and DNS spoofing. When using SSH login (instead of rlogin) the entire login session, including transmission of password, is encrypted; therefore it is almost impossible for an outsider to collect passwords. Now, Unix servers have over 85% to 90% of the web hosting market share, especially in a shared-server, or multi-user environment.
